The Daily Update - Invoking the 25th

Yesterday Mike Pence, the Vice President of the United States, refused to remove his boss from office shortly before the House passed a measure calling the Cabinet and him to invoke the 25th Amendment. In a vote the House approved a resolution urging them to force Trump out of the White House by 223 to 205. No Democrats voted against the measure and one Republican actually supported it. In a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Pence wrote ‘I do not believe that such a course of action is in the best interest of our Nation or consistent with our Constitution’ and that using the process would set a ‘terrible precedent’. He went on to urge Congress ‘to avoid actions that would further divide and inflame the passions of the moment’ adding ‘we prepare to inaugurate President-elect Joe Biden as the next President of the United States’.

Naturally, Trump himself has not backed down from his remarks that led to the violence last week, even warning that it would be dangerous for the United States if he were to be impeached for his conduct. Speaking to reporters he stated, ‘People thought what I said was totally appropriate’ adding ‘This impeachment is causing tremendous anger, and you’re doing it, and it’s really a terrible thing that they’re doing’. Trump, who has been banned from various social media platforms, also claimed that ‘Big Tech has made a terrible mistake’ adding ‘there’s always a counter move when they do that. I’ve never seen such anger as I see right now, and that’s a terrible thing’.

Pelosi said that if Pence does not remove Trump, the chamber would vote today to make Trump the first president ever to be impeached twice. The first being in late 2019 when he pressured the Ukrainian President to announce that the country was investigating Biden and his son Hunter over purported misconduct. Trump withheld military aid to Ukraine to use as leverage, which had already been approved by Congress.
